Setting new goals is like embarking on a thrilling adventure. We always imagine setting a goal like “Save money” or “Diet and get fit”. While we have these intentions, however, lack of motivation, specifically can leads to vague goals. It is like navigating a ship without a destination, and where it lacks of direction, making it challenging to measure progress and the result? Frustration and often, abandonment of the goal altogether.
Have you ever heard of SMART goals? It is a simple, time-tested solution where the acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
It is easy to come out with general goal like “Diet and get fit” because we are all aware that sometimes “it is easier to be said than done”. However, with specific goal where we need to commit to exercise 3 times a week, sleep early at night, and eat clean, it is not easy! We have to be discipline enough so that we can achieve the goal that we have always wanted.
Instead of we are only targeting to “Save money”, try to make a quantifiable goal such as put MYR 200 for target saving in different categories (travel, emergency, personal). That way, we will be able to strategize better and achieve our goals.
Ensure your goal is realistic. Setting a goal to run a marathon next month where you’ve never jogged is setting yourself up for disappointment. Start with a small step such as run for 2 to 5 km and progress from there.
Your goal should be aligned with your life and aspirations. If things that you do doesn’t give a purpose or meaning to your life, perhaps, there is a better goal waiting for you.
Set a timeline or deadline. It helps your mind to have a sense of urgency and a clear timeframe for your goal.
Clear, SMART goals transform vague aspirations into actionable plans. They provide a roadmap, making the journey to achievement more straightforward and enjoyable. With each milestone reached, you gain momentum, motivation, and a sense of accomplishment.
Setting goals is not merely about wishing for change; it’s about taking intentional steps toward a better version of yourself. By embracing the simplicity and effectiveness of SMART goals, you turn your dreams into reality. Remember, the biggest mistake is not in dreaming big, but in failing to define those dreams clearly. So, armed with the knowledge of SMART goals, go ahead, set your ambitions, and watch as your aspirations transform from mere thoughts into remarkable achievements.
