Developing and preserving an inclusive culture is one of the biggest problems in today’s hybrid workplace. The limitation of organic moments of human connection creates less productivity and engagement within the team. Therefore, leaders need to create opportunities for meaningful connection for remote employee. One way is through storytelling.
The neurochemical oxytocin, also referred to as the “bonding” hormone, is released by our brains when we hear stories because it helps us relate to the narrator and/or the characters. We often share stories with colleague in office environment, and from there we can feel some connection and empathy. However, when work goes hybrid, this connection might be limited but it doesn’t necessarily need to go away. Storytelling just needs some intentional, consistent, encouragement to help bring remote employees into the fold. Let’s discover some ways to promote storytelling.
Storytelling can happen anywhere at any time. In business meetings, it’s easy to view any diversion from the agenda as an inconvenience. However, when you notice storytelling unfolding, resist the urge to interrupt. Even if the meeting extends slightly, it’s worthwhile. Stories help to engage and unite within your hybrid team. Allow them to unfold naturally.
Ice breakers is a start-off activity to loosen up the tension of certain environment. Usually, it will be done when welcoming new joiners and if you’re in charge of a new hybrid team, use storytelling as an ice breaker. Create a small breakout group in online meeting tool, and use storytelling prompt. Everyone can actively involve in such activities like sharing childhood stories, early teenagers, or any other age. That way, it helps to create meaningful session and build connection within the group.
Every day we struggle with our own tasks, and we find it difficult to express our feelings or stories when the tasks piled up. The question is when? It can be done at beginning or end of one-on-one catch up or team meeting. Spend some time to share your personal anecdote, it can be from your recent vacation or you find some funny meme online. Stories with dilemmas and resolutions is the most effective way as it helps to create engagement and empathy within group.
